EAIS started work in 2000 with a work force consisting of the Team Leader, the National Project Director and three employees. Today, 30 full time and 20 part time members are working in the project, divided between SCA employees and EAIS affiliates. The project is financed by MFA and technical assistance is provided by the Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE), while the SCA has contributed with premises, personnel and full permission to collect and disseminate information. EAIS collaborates with a number of Egyptian and international archaeologists and stakeholders such as the Egyptian Survey Authority and the General Organization of Physical Planning.
EAIS has been created as a Centre of Excellence and will help pave the way for a sustainable cultural resource management in Egypt. Institutional and human resource development is a primary concern of EAIS and includes GIS, computer and management courses for its staff and affiliated SCA departments.
